The camp will expose senior high school students to issues and trends in agricultural biotechnology through lectures on the agriculture landscape in Southeast Asia, biotechnology applications in crops, livestock, and fisheries, and hands on exercises on DNA extraction and edible landscaping. It will also involve study visits to biotech research facilities and institutions in Los Baños, Laguna. The activity aims to create awareness on agriculture, introduce traditional and modern biotechnology, and build interest for agriculture, particularly biotechnology, as a career among the students. Expected participants are senior high school students and their teachers from Isabela, Pampanga, Laguna, Iloilo, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan De Oro, and General Santos.
The boot camp is co-organized by SEARCA's Biotechnology Information Center (BIC) under the Knowledge Management Department (KMD) with the University of the Philippines - Institute of Plant Breeding (UPLB-IPB), Philippine Genome Center for Agriculture, Department of Agriculture - Biotech Program Office (DA-BPO), University of the Philippines League of Agricultural Biotechnology Students (UP LABS), and UP Genetic Researchers and Agricultural Innovators Society (UP GRAINS).
