The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) based here is inviting schools division administrators and supplemental feeding program planners in the Calabarzon Region for a forum to present the results and outputs of their school-based nutrition study on May 8.

IIRR Country Manager for the Philippine Program Emelita Monville Oro, in her invitation, said that the action research findings on “Improving Food and Nutrition Security in the Philippines through School Interventions” will be presented at the IIRR ‘s Y.C. James Chen Center here.

The forthcoming forum is expected to gather some 220 delegates from DepEd Central, Regional and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) Regional Offices, Calabarzon Lighthouse School Heads, plus DSWD Calabarzon and Mimaropa Region (Mindoro Oriental/Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan).

The gathering aims not just to provide a platform for sharing of research results, but engage the participants on a healthy exchange on how to move forward in scaling out the Integrated School Model.

The one-day forum also targets to mainstream food, nutrition and agriculture issues and breakthrough with both mainstream and social media and recognize the 58 Lighthouse schools in Calabarzon.

IIRR’s presentation will include generated data and information of the research project jointly implemented by the IIRR, Department of Education (DepEd) and Food and Nutrition Research Institute-Department of Science and Technology (FNRI- DOST).

The collaborative research work has also drawn the support from other agencies and is considered useful to DepEd program planners and decision makers, as well as to other institutions supporting school nutrition programs.

In 2012 to 2015, IIRR in collaboration with DepEd Division of Cavite and FNRI-DOST implemented the said action research project, using an integrated school nutrition model that links school gardens, supplementary feeding, and nutrition education (GarNESupp).

The GarNESupp is a model that builds on existing nutrition intervention of DepEd with emphasis on sustainability and synergy programs “for better results and sustained nutrition outcomes for Filipino school children,” added Oro.
